A few days ago I opened Spotify and said to my phone, "Give me something for late-night writing."

It actually made me a list. The first few tracks were wordless instrumentals, the tempo neither fast nor slow—just enough to cover the sound of my keyboard.

I froze for a second.

Because I suddenly realized I hadn't been "searching for songs." I'd been chatting with someone who knew music. And that someone was Spotify.

That moment stuck with me for days. How did a music-streaming company quietly turn into an AI company?

Then it clicked. Spotify isn't doing "music recommendation." It's doing "understanding you."

How a Recommendation Engine Became Someone You Talk To

Let's walk the timeline.

Spotify now runs at roughly 761 million monthly active users—293 million of them paid subscribers—spread across more than 180 countries, according to its Q1 2026 earnings.

761 million. To put that in perspective: you could fit the entire population of Europe inside it and still have room to stuff in a few extra countries.

At that scale, hand-curating playlists for every user is a fantasy. Keyword search? Even more of one. From day one, it could only ever be an AI company. AI wasn't an option for Spotify—it was its lifeblood.

Here's the interesting part, though: before 2024, that AI lived backstage. You listened, it pushed something at you, and you had no idea what happened in between.

After 2024, the AI stepped out on stage.

In July 2026, Spotify launched a feature called Talk to Spotify. Premium subscribers can now talk to it—by voice or by typing—and have an actual conversation. Tell it a mood, it builds a list. Ask it about an album, it answers. Want to revisit what you listened to last month? It lays it all out for you.

No menu-diving, no swiping. Just speak.

That's a qualitative shift.

Think about it: for a decade, the way we used streaming was "browse—click—filter." Spotify tore that whole interaction model down and replaced it with "speak—listen."

It turned the AI from a search box into a DJ.

You Don't Just Listen—You Get to Direct It

Here's another feature that made me think, "Okay, this is actually onto something."

In 2024 Spotify shipped AI Playlists. You type a sentence, or even throw an emoji at it, and it builds you a playlist. In April 2025 the feature rolled out to more than 40 new markets in one sweep.

The cleverest part? You can haggle with it.

Once it puts together a list, you say "make it hype," or "lose the guitars," and it instantly revises. It's the same feeling as ordering street food and telling the owner, "go easy on the chili."

Passive listening became active direction.

Then the feature expanded into podcasts and audiobooks. So you can literally say, "I want a podcast that keeps me awake on my commute," and it'll pick one out for you.

And then there's AI DJ. The moment it launched, it blew up. By May 2026 it had reached more than 75 markets and added four languages—French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese—each with a locally voiced host. Not a stiff, dubbed feel. Something that genuinely sounds like a local.

And now this DJ takes requests. Mid-track, you say "switch the vibe," and it switches.

This isn't an algorithm anymore. It's a virtual host with personality.

How It "Gets" You

Behind all the flash, the real workhorse is still that old reliable—the recommendation engine.

Discover Weekly, the 30-song playlist it builds for you every Monday, has to be one of the most famous AI features in consumer tech. It's powered by your play history, the playlists you've built, the songs you've liked and disliked. Every Monday morning, millions of people open Spotify and the first thing they do is check what it lined up this week.

How exactly it computes all that, outsiders don't really know. But the results are right there—plenty of independent artists got their break here.

Even more playful are Daylists. This playlist refreshes several times a day, and each refresh gets a wildly specific, slightly ridiculous name—something like "Midwest Emo Flannel Tuesday Morning." These names are assembled by AI from thousands of tags, and they practically beg to be screenshotted and posted. And sure enough, they became a meme on social media.

Notice what's happening: Spotify isn't just using AI to be "accurate." It's using it to be fun.

A feature that makes people want to share is worth far more than a feature that's merely accurate.

It Even Dared to Put "Creation" in Users' Hands

This, I think, is the boldest move of 2026.

In May, Spotify rolled out a paid add-on for Premium subscribers—a licensed generative-AI tool that lets users legally cover and remix songs from authorized artists.

Legally. That word carries weight.

Everyone else in AI-generated music has been circling the legal gray zone. Spotify built the licensing straight into the tool—the artists signed off, the labels signed off, and the users get to play. Nobody's uncomfortable.

It also put out a desktop app called Studio that generates a daily, personalized audio briefing drawn from the taste profile built by your music and podcast history.

A quiet feature. A serious ambition.

Spotify no longer wants you to "listen to what others made." It wants you to "make your own."

When AI Can Make Anything, Why Should Anyone Trust It?

And that brings up a question you can't avoid.

AI can now write songs, cover them, synthesize voices. So how do I know whether the voice in my headphones is a real singer or a machine imitation?

In April 2026, Spotify offered an answer: Verified by Spotify. A verification badge.

But it isn't just a generic checkmark. Verified artist pages get a dedicated section that lays out the key milestones of the career, the latest releases, where the tour is heading. It doesn't hand you a badge—it hands you a full backstory.

At the same time, it launched SongDNA and About the Song, pulling the curtain back on any track—who arranged it, who recorded it, what influenced it. The deeper you want to dig, the further down it takes you.

It doesn't give you three words—"this is real." It gives you an entire story of "who this is."

Beyond Music: It Spread AI Everywhere Ears Can Reach

On the podcast side, AI is everywhere too.

Podcasts now auto-split into chapters, come with full transcripts, and let you ask the AI questions while you listen. Listening to a podcast went from a one-way feed to "look it up, ask about it."

Audiobooks reached a catalog of more than 700,000 titles. Then there's Page Match—you put the paperback down at page 50, open Spotify, and it picks up reading page 50 to you. A seamless handoff between two formats.

And there's one more thing I really want to call out: AI voice translation for podcasts. Under the hood, it runs on OpenAI tech. It can translate an English podcast into another language while keeping the host's original voice and cadence. The earliest pilots featured marquee hosts like Lex Fridman and Bill Simmons.

Which means a listener who doesn't speak English can hear Lex Fridman's actual voice talking through his show—in their own language—without losing that personal feel.

What this does is turn audio from a product in one language into a global product.

It Even Figured Out Who Your "Superfans" Are

One last detail, and it's one that actually lands.

Spotify has a feature called Reserved that crunches the data in the background to find each artist's most hardcore paid listeners. Those fans get early ticket access before the tour goes on sale to the general public—up to two tickets each.

Is AI doing this? Yes. But the way it does it is quiet—never the star of the show. It doesn't send a notification saying "Congratulations, you're a superfan." It just quietly opens a door for you.

That unshowy kind of "knowing" is what actually makes people feel they belong.

The highest form of personalization gives you perks without ever making you feel like you've been figured out.

So What Does This Have to Do With You?

At this point someone's bound to say, "Spotify is a music company—what does any of this have to do with me running e-commerce, SaaS, or a consumer brand?"

A lot, actually.

Look at what Spotify did. In a single line: it didn't "add" an AI to its old product. It rebuilt the entire product out of AI.

The recommendation engine is the foundation. On top of it, Spotify layered a conversation layer, a creation layer, a trust layer, a fan layer. None of them is an isolated AI feature—every one of them points back to the same thing: making the user feel, "This was made for me, and only me."

Most companies are still out there asking, "How do I add a chatbot to my website?"

That's thinking small.

The real question isn't "what AI feature should I add?" It's: if I built this from scratch today, what previously-impossible experiences does AI suddenly make possible?

Spotify's answer was to rewrite "serve the masses" as "serve every single person."

761 million people. One copy each.

That's what AI-native means.

Not patching up an old product—but rethinking what users actually want, then using AI to build that thing from scratch.
